Using Reference Manager v9.0 with the FCLA Z39.50 Server


First you must change the overall FCLA configuration preset in Reference Manager 9. After you change this configuration, it is easy to add any FCLA database.
 

To change the overall FCLA configuration:

  1. Open any of your Reference Manager's databases.  NOTE: the sample .rmd is OK to use.
  2. Click on the Activate Retrieval icon on the toolbar (or F4), and a retrieval screen will appear.

  3. Click the box next to Internet Search on the retrieval screen toolbar.
  4. Choose Z39.50 Sites in the pulldown box to the left of the Internet Search checkbox.
  5. Click on the Select Z39.50 Hosts and Databases icon (a globe with a hand).

  6. Click the Configure... button.
  7. A screen with server connections listed appears.
  8. Highlight Florida Center for Library Automation.
  9. Click the Modify Host.
  10. On the Host Properties box that appears, type in the proper Domain Name: z3950.fcla.edu
  11. Click the More button.
  12. Click the Login button.
  13. Enter your 14-digit library card number as your userid.  No password required.
  14. If this is not your copy of the software, put a check mark next to prompt.  NOTE: this way it will prompt a user for an ID.
  15. Click OK until you get to the Configure window.
  16. Now Click Test Host.
  17. You should receive a message box and at the bottom it should say: SUCCESS: Server responding properly.
  18. Click OK.
  19. On the next window click Apply and then OK.
  20. Click OK on the remaining window.
NOTE:  You should be back to the retrieval screen.  This step has changed all the FCLA connections configured in Reference Manager.

To add restricted databases to Reference Manager:

Be sure that you changed the overall FCLA configuration that was preset in Reference Manager 9.
  1. Choose File.
  2. Select New database or choose an existing one.
  3. When the database screen appears click on the Activate Retrieval icon on the toolbar (or F4).
  4. On the retrieval screen, click the box next to Internet Search on the toolbar.
  5. Choose Z39.50 sites in the pulldown to the left of the Internet Search checkbox.
  6. Click on the Select Z39.50 Hosts and Databases icon (a globe with a hand).
  7. Click the Configure... button.
  8. A screen with server connections listed appears.
  9. Highlight Florida Center for Library Automation.
  10. Click the New Database button.
  11. In the Database Name field, type the 2-letter database code, i.e., PY.
  12. In the Description field, type the name that you decided to call the database, i.e., FCLA's PsycInfo.
  13. Click OK.
  14. You'll be asked if you want to add another FCLA database.  NOTE: Yes will continue so you can add others at this time and No will exit.
  15. Your new database should appear in the list.
  16. Click OK to exit all configuration windows.
