1. Add tags to a format if we're ever likely to use them in the forseeable future.
2. Make labels for the same tag as consistent across all formats as possible, to reduce patron confusion.
3. Make tags/labels as consistent across institutions as possible, for the benefit of distance education students and others who will use catalogs of many SUS institutions.
4. Use display constants where appropriate, to
   1. free up labels for tags added to each format
   2. provide a cleaner look to the labels area
5. Reorder the display sequence where dictated by labels. LUIS requires that all tags with the same labels be displayed together; i.e. we cannot display NOTES, CONTENTS, NOTES.
6. Place less emphasis on label length, since WebLUIS currently displays all labels on a separate line from the text.

1. Added tags not previously used by the format.

3. Altered the display order of the tags.
4. Checked what tags are being indexed in MHI and keyword, keeping in mind that indexing cannot vary by format.

3. Minor alterations (and greater consistency) to the fields displaying in Brief views. We are recommending the inclusion of subfield c in both the 245 and 260 fields in the Brief views.
4. The 780/785 have been moved up high in the record, with the label PUBLISHING HISTORY and display constants to indicate CONTINUES, CONTINUED BY, etc. Perhaps these title changes can be hotlinked in WebLUIS.
5. All the 4xx and 8xx series entries are displaying together. This change may be cheered by reference librarians and jeered by catalogers -- let's see how this arrangement works in production.
6. We've added display constants in the 856 field as recommended by LC. These display constants are not yet in use, but you may preview them on the Computer Files Format Review page.

What you should look at:

1. Tables on the web page (http://www.fcla.edu/FCLAinfo/jtsub/jtsubpg.html) -- "Proposed changes" -- illustrate the recommended display order, added tags, and added/changed labels.
2. Summary recommendations for each format are on the web page, along with a separate document outlining the recommended changes common to all formats. The summaries were written at intermediate stages of this project, and may not completely reflect the final recommendations.
3. The recommendations have been copied into LTTF, along with some sample records. In LTTF, type FI NO=FORMAT to display the records we've indexed for this project. Press the F10 key or type LONG (or BRIF) to display the public view of a record. (You can then press F1 to scroll through all the records selected, while retaining the public view.) Feel free to derive other records into LTTF so you can compare their display in production with their display under these recommendations (and add the line [035::(snx)format] so others can find the records). Please don't alter any records in LTTF that are already coded for FORMAT in 035.
   LTTF records can now be viewed in WebLUIS:
   1. Within WebLUIS, select "WebLUIS Home Page".
   2. From the bottom of the WebLUIS Home Page, select "WebLUIS - New Features to Test".
   3. Select "Training File".
   4. Select the "command" search mode.
   5. type NO=FORMAT
4. Note that the display constants aren't "live" yet. We've keyed the text in to simulate the appearance in production. We may have missed keying in some text in some records. And because we keyed in the text, the MHI indexing isn't working properly. You may retrieve a record in LTTF by typing T=COVER TITLE that you won't retrieve if you type T=JOURNAL OF ANNOYING TITLES (for example). Please imagine along with us!
5. Few indexing changes in Keyword or MHI were recommended.
6. The sample records in LTTF and the tag charts may not reflect the recommendations posed in these pages precisely. Not all of our proposals can be "simulated" in LTTF without serious programming effort. We apologize for any inconsistencies you notice that may be due to oversight or typos. Please don't hesitate to ask whether we really meant to convey details that look odd to you.
7. Please let us know if we left out important local practices. As stated earlier, we recommend eliminating cosmetic cross-institution inconsistencies (such as changing the "added series" labels to "series"). But we know some unique configurations must still apply. Holler, and we'll add them in.

Other issues we unearthed that deserve consideration elsewhere:

• How should we treat obsolete tags? Should they: be deleted; have their text copied into currently valid tags; display or not display in the online catalogs? Should some obsolete tags be treated differently from others?
• Should the plain 500 notes be keyword-indexed? We agreed to continue the current practice of not keyword-indexing the plain 500s at this time. Suggestions range from indexing certain 500 notes to finding another 5xx that is keyword-indexed for that information.
• The Visual Format is recommending use of the 653 tag for uncontrolled vocabularies, labeled INDEX TERMS. Is there statewide support for using the 653 tag in other formats for local indexing? And would we want to wipe out any text currently residing in 653 (such as British subject headings) before reusing the tag for local interests?
• Clickable links in WebLUIS: Most of our suggestions regarding clickable fields in WebLUIS are already on FCLA's enhancement list or are being discussed actively on WebLUIS-L.

  What's next: When the SUS Public Services Planning Committee and the SUS Technical Services Planning Committee approve our recommendations, they will be forwarded to FCLA for implementation. We cannot predict with certainty how all these changes will appear in the catalogs, particularly as we need to include obsolete cataloging practices. Please report any oddities in the public display after implementation. We will fix emergency problems immediately, and save up the non-emergencies for re-evaluation in approximately 6 months.

List of recommended changes -- will be posted to FCLLIST for comment. We repeat here that label display changes can be made fairly soon, but indexing changes or display constants changes require programming assignments.
