With non-MARC records the migration process is somewhat more complex than with MARC records: a "collection code" field in one system may be called an "item type" field in another system, and it may not be immediately apparent that the two fields serve the same purpose.
Migrating non-MARC records is often a process of answering the following questions:
In order to answer the last question, we need to be aware of all of the functions of the various records and fields in our system.
- What fields are used in our non-MARC records?
- What values are contained in those fields?
- What purpose or function does each field serve?
- How does the new system accomplish this function?
And, most importantly:- Where do we load each non-MARC record type, field, and values in the new system?
Preparing for non-MARC data migration:
- Review your tables to determine if any of your location, etc. codes have never been used. This is a good time to consolidate and delete unnecessary or outdated codes.
- Delete any unnecessary records
- Update fixed fields [this needs more work]
