MXFClient Installation Instructions

1. Prior to Installation

System Requirements

Windows 98, NT, or 2000

• All Windows Users:
  Must install the Microsoft XML Components (msxml3.exe) on the target machine. Installation of the XML Components requires the current version of the Windows Installer. Windows Installer must be installed before the XML Components. All these installation programs can be found on the FCLA ftp site: www.fcla.edu/secure/downloads/clients/MXF/. Note that there are 2 versions of the Windows Installer, choose the one appropriate for the corresponding operating system (use the NT installer for Windows2000).
• Windows 98 users must first install dcom98 before installing the MXFClient. The dcom98 installation program is available on the Microsoft dcom98 download page. Once downloaded, install dcom98 by double-clicking the dcom98.exe icon and following the instructions. You may be asked to restart your computer to complete the installation of dcom98, if so, then restart the machine before continuing with installation of the MXFClient.
• Windows NT users must install NT Service Pack 6 or higher prior to installation of the MXFClient. To determine if Service Pack 6 has already been installed, open My Computer and select "About Windows NT" from the "Help" menu. If the version information does not include "Service Pack 6" (or higher) then the service pack must be installed. NT Service Pack 6 can be found at the Microsoft NT Service Pack 6 download site. Once downloaded, install Service Pack 6 by double-clicking on its icon and following the instructions. You may be asked to restart your computer to complete the installation of Service Pack 6, if so, then restart the machine before continuing with installation of the MXFClient.
• Windows 2000 users must install Windows 2000 Service Pack 2 or higher prior to installation of the MXFClient. To determine if Service Pack 2 has already been installed, open My Computer and select "About Windows" from the "Help" menu. If the version information does not include "Service Pack 2" (or higher) then the service pack must be installed. Service Pack 2 can be found at the Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 2 download site. Once downloaded, install Service Pack 2 by double-clicking on its icon and following the instructions. You may be asked to restart your computer to complete the installation of Service Pack 2, if so, then restart the machine before continuing with installation of the MXFClient.

1. Save all data and close all open applications
2. Go to: www.fcla.edu/secure/downloads/clients/MXF/ to download the client. This is a secure area of the FCLA server so you will need to login using your NOTIS ID and password.
3. Choose MXFClient Setup.exe to download to your temp directory.
4. Double-click on the program in your temp directory and then click "OK" to continue with installation.
5. The MXFClient Setup Program will install the necessary system files first.
• You may be prompted to restart your computer to complete the system file installation. If this happens, select "Yes"' to restart the computer. Once the computer has been restarted, continue the MXFClient installation at step number 1.
6. Once the MXFClient Setup Program has completed the system file installation, it will continue by asking where you would like the MXFClient to be installed. The selection of the MXFClient folder should be based on the type of work environment:
• If the client will only be used on one machine, then select a local folder. The default folder of "C:\Program Files\MXFClient" is a good choice.
• If the client will be used in a networked environment, by multiple people on different machines, the client should be installed on a network drive that is accessible by all target machines. The network mapping for that drive should be the same for all target machines (i.e. drive should be known as "L:\" on each machine).
• Certain files must exist on each target machine. In a network installation, the client must be installed on each client machine to guarantee that the computer has the necessary files. Therefore installation steps 1-9 must be followed on each client machine. Each individual installation should be made to the same network path.
• Note that in this situation, if the client is uninstalled from one machine, the program file (MXFClient.exe) and the MXF DTD (MXF.dtd) will be deleted from the network drive. Since these files are used by multiple machines on the network, their removal will prevent other machines from using the program.
7. When presented with the "MXFClient – Choose program group" dialog box, accept the default program group of "MXFClient" by clicking "Continue".
8. The MXFClient Setup Program will now continue by installing the Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC).
• You may be prompted to restart your computer to complete the MDAC installation. If this happens, select "Yes"' to restart the computer. Once the computer has been restarted, continue the MXFClient installation at step number 1.
9. Once installation of MDAC has completed, the MXFClient Setup Program will automatically install all other files necessary to run the client.
• You may be presented a "Version Conflict" dialog box with the message "A file being copied is not newer than the file currently existing on your system. It is recommended that you keep your existing file". If this occurs, select "Yes" to keep the current file.
10. Finally, a message will appear which states that the MXFClient setup has completed successfully.
