What is the chain of contact for reporting problems with WebLUIS and/or LUIS via 3270?

Librarians should contact their library systems office to report the problem. Systems staff should investigate if there is a local connectivity problem either in the library or on campus. If local connectivity is NOT the problem, someone at the library should call NERDC to report that WebLUIS access is not working. NERDC staff will determine if they can correct the problem, and if not, will contact FCLA staff for further action.

The NERDC phone number to be used for this purpose is: 352/392-2061 or SUNCOM 622-2061 (ask for Teleprocessing). If you call 352/392-6775 (SC 622-6775) you will hear a recording of the system status. If there is a major outage that affects all NERDC services, it will be reported. However, if the recording does not say that there is anything wrong, you should call the first NERDC number. Yours may be the call that alerts them to the fact that there is a problem.

How are LUIS and WebLUIS related? The search engine underlying WebLUIS is the LUIS search engine. WebLUIS is an alternate way of sending requests to the search engine and displaying the results of that search. The search engine itself is EXACTLY the same. What is different is how you construct searches. The 'easy' web-way of building a search is less controlled than the 3270 way (where everything is handled by the LUIS server itself). In the way WebLUIS is constructed, a different piece of software accepts the search and packages it up. Because the software developer has less control over an HTML-based interface than over a hard-wired terminal interface, there is more likelihood of strange interactions between browser software, the interface software and the server, in this case LUIS. Who makes decisions on the enhancements to WebLUIS? The WebLUIS Task Force is charged with making recommendations for the strategic direction of WebLUIS. The group explores options, define alternatives, and make recommendations on the functionality of this user interface. Additionally, this task force participates in the implementation of WebLUIS changes and revisions.

Items for general information of current Task Force activities and requests for feedback are posted on the WEBLUIS-L listserv. Anyone may suggest a change to WebLUIS and request initial discussion of the idea by posting it to WEBLUIS-L or (or asking an institutional representative to do so). That listserv includes all members of the WebLUIS Task Force, all PSPC members, and many others who have expressed interest in being involved in this development - and is the most appropriate place for discussions of this type. Any other interested persons may also be added to the list. The list archives are immediately updated online and are available for monitoring by anyone at http://www.lists.ufl.edu/archives/webluis-l.html.

Ideas are discussed on WEBLUIS-L in order to determine interest in the suggested change, identify particular pros and/or cons to be considered, and suggest possible refinements/modifications to the original idea. In addition, FCLA staff conveys any initial concerns they have with technical implementation of the idea. As many individual postings to the list as possible are encouraged during this period to help others clarify their own thinking about the idea.

Following each idea, a formal "numbered" proposal is posted on a web page that keeps track the status of proposals. WebLUIS Task Force members will submit their institution's vote on a formal proposal to WEBLUIS-L. NOTE: Each SUS institution, the Health and Law Libraries, and FCLA have one vote. Once approved, FCLA will develop an implementation schedule for the idea which will, if possible, include some period of viewing the upcoming change in a test environment before implementation.
