Using EndNote with the FCLA Z39.50 Server

These instructions have been written using version 4.0 but please try them in the current version. They usually work.

Some Florida Center for Library Automation (FCLA) databases are accessible via the Z39.50 server. The catalogs of the ten Florida State University System libraries are available to all. For restricted databases, you must have a valid 14-digit patron ID library card number to login.

Here is an example of how to have EndNote prompt for a valid 14-digit patron ID library card number to login. Notice the LOGIN INFORMATION REQUIRED section and the Custom box. If you are setting up a connection to one of our databases that does not require a login, that Custom box (in the Connection Settings) will not need checked.

Connection Setting Example

Here is an EndNote Connection file set up for for PY (PsycInfo), a restricted database that requires your valid 14-digit patron ID library card number to login. Download this file, place it in your EndNote Connections file. A typical directory path to this is: C:\Program Files\EndNote\Connections

You can edit this file in EndNote to setup any of the other restricted databases (substituting the database and database name input fields) and use the Save As... feature in EndNote to rename the connection as appropriate.

Remember, if you are setting up a connection to one of our databases that does not require a login, that Custom box in the Connection Setting will not need checked.

To download this file, click with the right mouse button to find your browswer's save option.

Often you will have to add these additional settings in this connection file:

Go into the Connection File and instead of choosing Connection Settings, choose Templates. In Reference Type Book, add the 008 tag and call the field year. In Reference Type Journal do the same thing. Also add the following 773 tags in both types:

Here are the 773 tags to add. Maybe you can copy and paste from here.

773 $tJournal $bDate Year, $gVol Volume(Issue), $3Pages
773 $tJournal $bYear, $gVol Volume(Issue), $3Pages
773 $tJournal $bDate Year, $gVol Volume, $3Pages
773 $tJournal $bYear, $gVol Volume, $3Pages
773 $tJournal $bDate Year, $gVol Volume(Issue), $3Pages
773 $tJournal $bYear, $gVol Volume(Issue), $3Pages

Now, still in Templates, copy the Book, Reference Type into the JOURNAL ARTICLE Reference Type (copy and paste should work).
